How to Train Your Voice
Just as athletes train their bodies to yield specific
results singers need to train their voices to produce the
desired notes, tones and pitch. This is certainly not something
that can be achieved in a day. Besides training your voice you
will need to include healthy eating, proper rest and regular
exercise in your daily regimen. Voice is produced by the speech
organs of the body like the throat muscles, larynx, vocal
chords mouth etc all of these organs have to be trained to move
in a way that will produce the desired sound effects. Mentioned
below are a few preliminary exercises that can be followed once
you start these you will be in a better position to understand
what works for you. Even though these exercises work quite
well, people who want to take up singing as a career should
definitely consider professional voice coaching.

Exercises:
It is imperative that you before you start any type of voice
training you follow a diligent warm up sessions this will
condition your speech organs for further exercise and prevent
the possibility of damage to the delicate vocal nodes
You will need a piano to start with the basic mid range
octave and the solfege notes ( do, re , mi, fa , so la, ti,
do). This first exercise is fairly simple and all you have to
do is increase your pitch; that is sing the octave in the
ascending order and then decrease the pitch; that is sing it in
the descending order ( do, ti, la, so, fa, mi, re , do)
Next, try coupling a few notes (usually three) and singing
them in the ascending and descending order. For instance try
‘do, re mi’ then ‘mi fa so’ followed by ‘so la ti ‘and finally
‘la ti do’( notice in this last triad even though you are
back at ‘do’ this is ‘do’ from the next octave which will have
a higher pitch than the ‘do’ from the first octave). Now
practice these notes in the descending order. Start with ‘do ti
la then ti, la, so’, followed by ‘so, fa, mi’ and finally ‘mi,
re do’. This will of course take some practice, also you will
definitely need a keyboard to help you with the pitch in the
beginning.
Legato: Once you have mastered these notes you can start
working your voice with a technique called Legato. This
involves singing words on different notes but these notes
should be connected in a smooth fashion and they will include a
combination of the high and low notes. For instance lets take
this group of notes ‘do, re , mi, fa, so fa , mi, re, do’.
Notice how the notes ascend from do to so and then descend from
so to do. This transition from the high pitched ‘so’ to the
lower pitched ‘fa’ should be very smooth. Try using words like
my “mi- mommy- made- me- eat- m&ms”. Remember that “ mi to
me will be sung on ‘do re mi fa’, moving the pitch higher
on the notes while eat will be on ‘so’ and then bring the pitch
down on the notes from my m&ms. It is imperative that the
notes and words be connected when you sing them in a smooth
fashion.
Stacatto: Staccato is in many sense the exact opposite
technique of Legato. Here you will not try to sing the words
smoothly rather each word or note is short and separate yet you
should be in complete control of your voice. Start by singing
the sound’ ha’ on the following notes do-mi-so-mi-do. You will
notice that the word ‘ha’ is ascended on the notes do-mi-so
while its descended on the notes ‘ mi-so’. It is essential to
monitor the movement of your stomach muscles, your diaphragm
and your breathing when you do this exercise so keep your hands
on your stomach. You will feel a slight shaking of the stomach
muscles when you make the sound. Make sure that you are
breathing from your diaphragm and not your chest.
Practicing Legato and Staccato is the perfect technique to
gain control over your voice.
