How to Sing Well
There are very few people who don’t like to sing or at least
hum to themselves. And normally they wouldn’t mind singing in
front of others either but they are not confident enough to do
so. So here are a few guidelines on how to sing well not only
for people with professional aspiration but also for those who
just want to get accolades for their karaoke singing or their
rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’.
The first aspect of singing well is recognizing pitch and
the ability to sing at a particular pitch. You will need a
vacuum cleaner, yes you heard it right, switch on the vacuum
cleaner and start cleaning the carpet. The vacuum cleaner emits
a sound at a specific and consistent tone. Try to match your
voice with this tone. Start by first listening to the pitch and
then by humming at this level. If you are going off key you
will feel a vibration in your throat. Try to adjust your voice
by humming up and down the scale till you are humming at the
right pitch. The closer you are the faster the vibrations will
be but if you are away from the pitch you will feel like your
humming is battling with the sound of the vacuum cleaner. This
exercise will help you to not only hear the tone and recognize
it but to also feel the music.

The next step in learning how to sing well is to control and
perfect your breathing. Start by placing your hand on your
diaphragm and breathing deeply while exhaling make a hissing
sound by producing the sound of ‘s’. Once you use all your
breath relax and repeat. Another way to help you to breathe
better is to take a deep breath with your hand still firmly
placed on your diaphragm. While exhaling wait till you have let
out most of the air and push out the last bit of air forcefully
as you say ‘k’. The right way to do this is to produce the
sound of ‘k’ rather forcefully so that by the time the sound is
completed your diaphragm should bounce back, filling your lungs
with air.
You cannot learn how to sing well unless you learn to smooth
your vocal breaks. Regardless of how good a voice you have you
will not sound good if your voice breaks in the middle of a
song. If you have encountered this problem, there are some
simple steps to eliminating this issue. This problem usually
occurs when you try to sing at a very high or a very low pitch.
The trick here should be to develop the lower range that extend
upwards and a higher range that extends downwards. This will
give you a middle range area that will give you a smooth strong
tone.
You will need to start by finding your week spot this can be
easily done with the help of a piano or a keyboard. Start by
singing a scale upwards from the lowest scale that you can
manage and sing up to the highest note. You will have to notice
the note at which your voice changes over from the low range to
the high range. Repeat the process this time starting at the
highest range and descending to the lowest range again marking
the note at which the voice changes from the higher to the
lower note. There will be some amount of over lapping of the
voices, usually over a range of 3-5 notes. This is the area
that you want to work in to get a rich tone.
Now start by pronouncing a very nasal ‘ng’ sound. This is
the sound made at the end of the word ‘sing’. When you make
this sound your voice is produced through the nasal cavity.
Start making the sound at a note which is in the middle of your
weak spot and scale down 2-3 notes below the lowest note in the
weak spot. Repeat the process by singing a note higher each
time.
You should try and feel the tone against the hard palate. As
the scale increases you will sound less nasal. Repeat the
process till you reach a note that is 2-3 notes higher than the
highest note in the weak spot. This exercise will help you to
achieve a smooth rich mid tone which is neither too high nor
too low yet your voice will not break while maintaining this
tone.
