Vibrato refers to oscillation that occurs between pitches, it is the shifting back and forth between pitches.
Start out slowly and pick up the pace as you progress. If you play piano use two keys that are side by side and
alternate playing them and matching your pitch to them as quickly as you can.
It is not a difficult technique to learn, but more of a journey on how it is done. You have to make an effort to
do it when you sing. It will take a bit of time for it to fully develop, but soon it will be as natural as your
regular singing voice. With patience, training and time you will do well.
The definition of vibrato is the free oscillation of ones vocal chords. It can result from an open
throat or pharynx or closed vocals chords and and open throat. It helps to even the pressure in the sub-glottic
area. This involves intercostal, pectoral, upper gludial and abdominal muscles as well as the lower lumbar area.
Similar to a stringed instrument, the vocal fold's tension is rhythmically varied and creates the movement in your
pitch. The combination of tone, volume and pitch set the difference between tremolo, a change in volume alone, and
wobble which is a change in only pitch.
Singing vibrato adds expression to instrumental and vocal music. It is characterized by the extent of vibrato or
pitch variation and the rate of vibrato or the speed in which you vary the pitch. One method to check your vibrato
is to lie on your back and place your hand over your belly button and breath feeling the rise and fall of your
stomach. Sing a note and vary the pitch. If the note is stiff note how your abs feel. When you push from your
stomach too much the muscles around your larynx will tense and the vibrato will be gone. Having the proper balance
when you sing will enable you to produce an easy vibrato.
There are common problems when learning how to sing vibrato such as:. A lack of proper resistance to breath
pressure or voice wobble. The tone lacks focus and it can be caused by the age of the voice, as it is called. This
can be remedied with vocal exercises.
- Vibrato that is too fast can be caused by pressure on the back of the tongue that can occur when taking a
breath or at the beginning of a sound.
- Lack of vocal cord approximation can occur when the vocal cords don't close after taking a breath. When the
vibration is fast the speed will depend on the vocal cord shape and size.
- When there is no vibrato it is called straight tone. The voice can be damaged by the formation of nodules
as there is too much pressure on the glottis preventing vibrato to occur.
- A pulsating diaphragm during a sustained tone or note creates a false vibrato. It is difficult to correct
as the muscles have memory but can be done with effort.
- Using a trill is a good way to begin to learn how to sing vibrato but you have to learn to release the
squeeze on the vocal chords to allow the vibrato to develop further.
A simple way to learn vibrato is to use a metronome set to about 60 BPM and use a guitar, keyboard or your voice
to set a pitch. Step the pitch up a half note from the first note you began with. Return to the original pitch and
repeat this a few times. Then go to the next highest note and increase the BPM to 70 on the metronome. Repeat this
process until you have reached about 5 notes up from where you started. Then work back down and you will find your
voice getting stronger after several weeks.
Make sure you have good posture and that you are breathing correctly. Relax your facial muscles, mouth, neck and
throat. Practice proper annunciation of vowels and consonants and yawn while singing notes. Yawning is the best
exercise to strengthen the muscles needed for singing vibrato. You can also practice moving your Adam's apple down
and holding it. Practice trills and sing long notes and practice holding them. With concerted effort you will soon
know how to sing vibrato.
